Well, it’s crazy to say but another month has flown by and this incredible experience is half over, I guess the old saying “time flies when you’re having fun” is true. It comes as no surprise that the month of October was filled with just as much adventure as the month of September.
After speaking with family and friends in Canada, I can easily say that I am happy to be here in the warm Caribbean weather compared to the getting colder by the second Canadian weather and I am taking every opportunity that I can on my days off to go and enjoy the beautiful beaches that Providenciales has to offer.
During the rest of the week, on any given day you can easily find myself and the other intern Grant at one of the schools on Provo as our days consist of heading into the schools around the island and teaching the students about rugby. I start each session off with a smile as the kids welcome me with a “Hi Coach Annik!” which can often be followed by a big hug. The more time that I spend with the kids, I see more of their personalities coming out and I am just as excited as they are for them to be learning something new. Having the kids express interest in what we are teaching and wanting to know how to get more involved is such a rewarding experience!
Alongside teaching rugby in the schools, we also have our Saturday morning sessions. This is where kids who may not have rugby sessions with their class or just want a little bit extra rugby practice come out and get a chance to build on their skills. These sessions are going very well and it’s great to see the kids build on their rugby knowledge all while having some fun!
The look of joy and the hugs received when the kids see us at the sessions is something that will never get old. It’s pretty incredible to see their growth and the pride that they have when the skills that we have been working on finally click. As proud as the kids are of themselves, I am just as or even more proud of them for taking on something new and challenging themselves.
Until next time,
Annik
