Hi Everyone!
This is my first post on the SportWORKS blog. My name is Brennen Guy and I am writing this blog from the Turks and Caicos Islands Rugby Football Union (TCIRFU) in Grace Bay, Turks and Caicos. My job with the TCIRFU is the Youth Development Officer for the sport of rugby in Turks and Caicos.
I have been in Turks and Caicos for just over two weeks and can honestly say it has been one of the best experiences I have ever had. There are multiple islands that make up the country of Turks and Caicos. I live on the island of Providenciales which is considered as the more populated and touristy island. I have never lived in a place as beautiful and exciting as Turks and Caicos. From the beaches, ocean, wildlife, and people that live here, Turks and Caicos is going to be an amazing place to live for four months.
Through my internship at the Turks and Caicos Islands Rugby Football Union I have met some amazing people. I have gained some truly amazing friends that go above and beyond to make sure that I am getting the full island experience. Although I am still trying to get used to island time, which means to be prepared to wait an extra hour from the time they told me.
My main goal as Youth Development Officer is to teach kids how to play rugby while also teaching them the benefits of playing the sport. I have been in contact with many of the primary and high schools in order to set up times to teach their students how to play rugby. In the next couple weeks I will be in the schools running rugby sessions which will help develop the sport in Turks and Caicos. Every Saturday morning I run rugby sessions for kids 8 and under. It is an amazing experience to be able to teach these kids about rugby. They are a great group of kids that are always eager to play.
This is going to be an amazing experience and I can’t wait to see what is in store for me.
