My name is Grant Baillie and I am one of the SportWORKS Officers with the Turks and Caicos Islands Rugby Football Union here in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos. So far, I have been here for four weeks and just starting to get the lay of the land and used to some of the differences between here and Canada.
We started out by going into schools for the first two weeks to meet with the PE teachers and Principals. We did this to gauge interest and to set up times to come into schools to run sessions during students’ PE periods and to promote our Saturday morning sessions for kids of all ages to come out and get into the game. Most schools have had previous Turks and Caicos Islands RFU interns run sessions before and were excited to have more come in and get more students involved in rugby.
Now that sessions have started and we are getting into classrooms for PE sessions and afterschool sessions, I am greatly enjoying it. Most the students are eager and want to learn more about the game and are excited to be playing games and throwing the rugby ball around. We have started with simple passing drills and games that promote rugby skills with the children but will be progressing into more technical drills as their enthusiasm and skill levels increase.
Signing off for now,
Grant Baillie
