Saturday May 28th, 2022 will go down as a special moment for many of our Newcomer youth. It was a wonderful opportunity to be a part of the Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) and to learn the history of the Baton along with the Commonwealth Games.
Leading up to the event, there was a lot planning, it was a long process, but seeing the end result was very rewarding.
Brian MacPherson, CEO of Commonwealth Sport Canada, gave an impassioned speech, detailing the significance of the Baton to everyone. He highlighted how Hamilton is so important overall to the Commonwealth Games and how the youth are the future of the Games and Canada.
We had a strong turn out for our Newcomer Badminton QBR event at McMaster University. It was held at the David Braley Athletic Centre, with the support of S4N, YMCA Hamilton and Badminton Ontario. We were able to run an event to provide an opportunity and encourage particip
ants to try a new sport.
A lot of great pictures and videos were taken with Baton. Two ‘Game Changers’ gave inspiring and incredible interviews. For example: Maria came from Colombia a year ago and was looking for ways to make friends. She always loved sports and loves to try new ones.
Overall it was a fun day of learning and laughing. Many of the youth made new friends, while wanting to find other sports they could bond over in the future. Seeing all their smiles at the end of the day was well worth it.
