March is almost done. This means that my internship is about to wrap up and I head back home!
Throughout the month I volunteered my time coaching five year old kids the fundamentals of football on Tuesdays at Grammar School playing field. I also play football with girls my age from System 3 Football Club on Wednesday. Football is a huge part of people’s everyday life and is a great way to embrace the country’s culture.
As my major project works alongside Mavis Joseph’s Junior Olympians Program I have been spending a lot of my time assisting her with the management and organization. I also spend my Saturday mornings working with the program and run the first and last 20 minutes of the program by leading games and the weekly devotions and motto.
This month I had the opportunity explore more of the island. On the windward side I got to see Georgetown and what it has to offer sport clubs. There was a surprising amount of facilities and courts that are available to use which showed the potential this town has in order to grow sport in the region. I also went up the leeward side of the island and was happy to see that Layou where High Performance sport club is based has a lot to offer as well! With a nice community center available for use, the sports like Table Tennis could strive in this area.
In regards to establishing multi-sport clubs I have changed my approach to taking on this task. Instead of working on individual goals and issues of each club I am now doing things in a more general manner so that each club can benefit if they wish to do so. For example, many of these clubs lack the financials needed to further expand and improve their operations. Instead of individually figuring out how to get them money, I have completed a Sponsorship Workshop that will hopefully be held early April. With knowledge of Sport Sponsorship (thanks to Dr. Corbett and her amazing course!) I was able to create a intensive workshop for the club executive members to attend. With some activities and a final test at the end, I hope that clubs will have the knowledge and confidence to go out there and seek sponsorship. I also got in touch with Brent Barootes, author of Reality Check: Straight Talk About Sponsorship Marketing, who has sent a copy of his application-based book down.
Now is the time to begin to focus on the last items needed for the course credit of SPMA 4F01 and 4F02 including the major project and reflection paper.
