Imagine viewing the clear blue waters where they meet the white sand beach encircling the entire island of your new life, internship, and adventure from a 24 seater propeller plane. Welcome to the Caribbean. Specifically Kingstown, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines where for the next three months I will be proudly interning for their Olympic Committee.
What will this experience bring to me? Not knowing what to expect has resulted in me having no expectations at all.I have lived abroad before but never to such an exotic place that embraces a vivid and unique culture. The natural and personal history of this location provides a foundation for what Saint Vincent is today.
A main theme of my mission here will aim to improve community sport through development. Although I have little idea of what I will actually be doing and how I will be making a difference through interning with SVGOC, I have high hopes of gaining substantial work experience while also building my cultural intelligence through living abroad yet again.
Seeing as this is my final semester of my undergraduate degree in Sport Management, I am trying to make the most of it. This is one of my last chances to get the most out of education without being in a classroom. I seek to gain applicable skills and effectively network with others in order to get my foot into the door of the sport industry.
Not only will I be interning for SVGOC but I will be seeing a new part of the world. A new culture. A new way of living. A new perspective of life. I have been told that the island life differs drastically than a country like Canada. I look forward to embracing this different lifestyle. No longer will I be driving through a Tim Horton’s drive thru but I will be walking in the heat to work. No longer will I be shopping for groceries at a superstore but I will be bargaining at markets. These changes will result in self growth and reflection. My life will be much different after these three months and I look forward to reflecting back on this post then.
