What an amazing month!! With restrictions slowly being lifted, I have been able to work in person with our host partner at YMCA Hamilton. We are currently running a soccer program for Newcomers on Fridays, the joy of the participants to be around others again is wonderful to see.
We are now getting ready to introduce our first large initiative for Newcomer girls specifically! Starting April 9, the Hamilton Centre for Newcomers and Volleyball Ontario are partnering to introduce Newcomer girls to volleyball. This is very exciting as the Newcomer girls and their parents expressed interest in learning and playing volleyball during the initiative. Volleyball Ontario wants to also promote the sport and encourage more Newcomer girls to participate. In May, we will be running a Newcomer Badminton event, which is also exciting.
As March 14th was Commonwealth Day, I used it as an opportunity to launch training sessions on quality sport for our host organization and youth volunteers. I conducted a presentation and workshop for everyone, which included details on the value of sport and how it can bring everyone together. We had a wonderful time learning from each other. I also had everyone participate in a 30 minute volleyball clinic, to observe and experience what Newcomer girl participants will get to do in the future. Overall it was a wonderful time.
We are all just so excited to see everything come together now, Hamilton is such a welcoming community. Everyone has been so nice and helpful, I am excited to all the events yet to come!!!
