Two weeks ago we hosted the first module of our Botswana Long Term Athlete Development (BLTAD) grassroots coaching programme. All ten coaches that registered showed up on each day of the seminar and successfully graduated by the end of the fifth and final day. Overall the module was a success and we experienced very few speed bumps during its execution. Considering our initial struggles, I am very proud of what we were able to accomplish.
By far, the best part of the running the seminar was working with all ten of the Taekwondo coaches. Each coach has agreed to take part in this programme despite it being on a volunteer basis and involving a substantial commitment. In total the programme involves 43 hours worth of in class training as well as travelling to primary schools several times a week to teach basic Taekwondo. In fact nine of the ten volunteers will be coaching 5 days per week.
During the first module, each coach showed up on time and was brimming with passion. Further, they demonstrated genuine enthusiasm for Taekwondo and were eager to learn as well as pass on their knowledge to their eventual students. All of this despite having modest backgrounds. I have no doubt that they will be awesome coaches.
On the first Sunday of February I went to an event called Jump for Brunch. Starting around lunch time, Jump for Brunch takes place on the Gaborone fair grounds and ends around sunset. During the event local musicians perform as the people in attendance dance and socialize, while indulging in local cuisine and a few beverages. It was definitely one of the best parties I have ever been to!
Thankfully it takes place on the first Sunday of every month….. I can’t wait to go back two more times!!
Until next time!!
