Hi guys,
Luke again. It’s time for the monthly update on how things are going over in paradise. Geordie and I have been here for a little over two weeks now and are finally getting into the swing of things as we move towards the Commonwealth Youth Games mid July. Much of our focus thus far has been put into each participating team’s “Team Size Calculator.” This is an excel file that details how many athletes each country plans to bring as well as what events they will compete in. There is more to this, but Geordie is covering it in his blog so I will touch on another aspect of our work thus far.
One of our coworkers, Drumeco Archer, allowed us to help on the marketing side of the games by providing any thoughts we had that might be useful. We produced a two page Word document and sent it over to him. This was an interesting project for us because we got to utilize some of the skills we learned from the various marketing courses at Brock. Some key terms like leveraging, target market, and call to action were used (thanks Dr. Cousens and Prof. Burton). One idea we had was to package the games with hotel, airline, and other activities in order to create a cheaper price for the entire experience but also to provide revenue for a variety of businesses. I won’t get into it today but you can expect to hear in my next few blogs if any of our ideas made the cut.
On the personal side, we have definitely loved our time here thus far. The local cuisine is noticeably much spicier than back home. As someone who doesn’t tend to have spicy food back home, this is something my taste buds will surely adjust for over time. We’ve seen a few beaches (one is a five minute walk from us and I’ve ceremoniously named it Canada Beach). We finally got out to snorkel just yesterday. We still have a lot to see and a lot to do but we have time still!

We get to work in our new office starting on Monday, which is at the Thomas A. Robinson Stadium. This is the location where many of the events will be held. This coming week we have England and Wales visiting Nassau for their site visit, so I expect we will be very busy. As a few people have already told us, we will be doing 2 years of work in 6 months.
